This year has been the year of me discovering The Lunar Chronicles. And you might think only this year? Yes, in Holland we’re a little late to the party. The first book in the series was published here back in 2012. I believe the second book was also published, but then they pulled the plug. It wasn’t selling good enough, can you believe that?
Well, that is what happened. The series didn’t really interest me, I had heard of it, but I never felt triggered to pick it up. I do remember the first book, the English version, being anywhere on BookTube and on blogs. So eventually I got the e-book and started reading. However, it didn’t really grab me and I put it down, knowing what I know now that was a stupid thing to do. Bear in mind that I had only read maybe like 20 pages of it. Basically, I gave up way too quickly.
A year or so later Blossom Books announced that they were going to publish the series. They even hosted a party for the release of the first book, which I attended. Blossom Books – which is definitely one of my favourite Dutch publishers – published all the books in beautiful hardcover editions and they all came with a bookmark. I figured I had to give Cinder another try, and you can probably already guess that I didn’t regret that decision. No, it was the opposite. I fell in love with these books. First with Cinder and then with all the other books. I have to say Winter is my favourite of the series. In that book everything comes together. I actually read that in one day – it’s a 800 page book…
Also, I know it’s a standalone and has nothing to do with the Lunar Chronicles, but I really love Heartless as well. That was actually the first book I read by Marissa Meyer. Now I can call it one of my favourite authors. And I am beyond excited about the fact that she is coming to The Netherlands in March 2018. There are no details yet whatsoever, but I really hope I’m going to be able to meet her then. That would be awesome.
Speaking of awesome… this week I posted a picture of Heartless (the English version, yes I actually own this book in English ánd in Dutch – they’re both gorgeous in different ways). Anyways, I was saying… Marissa Meyer actually responded on the picture. That really made my day and I felt like a fangirl at that moment. I still wonder how she saw my picture. Usually, I tag authors when I post a picture of one of their books, this time I didn’t, but it got to her anyway.
If you have no idea what The Lunar Chronicles is, firstly… where the hell have you been?! But secondly, I would certainly give this series a try. I can promise you that it’s worth it. For those who don’t know what the series is about. The books are basically fairytale retellings. So Cinder is a retelling of Cinderella, Scarlet of Red Riding Hood, Cress of Rapunzel and Winter of Snow White. But then completely different, with things like androids and cyborgs and lots of interesting things and twists. I’d love to see these books made into a TV show one day, I think that would be awesome.
Heartless is also a fairytale retelling. It is the story of the queen of hearts from Alice in Wonderland. Very interesting as well, because this book is basically the story of how she became so evil. Basically, you already know the ending, just not how she gets there. I thought this book was amazing as well.
